Bill Penfold
Bill Penfold had some rather big shoes to fill when he began racing Super Chargers in 1976 at Oxford Plains Speedway. His father, Ray, had raced on the dirt tracks in Maine starting in the late 1950s, and ended his brilliant career in 1985, after capturing the Wiscasset Speedway Championship. Bill raced for a few years in his father's shadow, but has become a racer in his own right - winning on all but two asphalt race tracks in the state of Maine. Soon, with 15 years of racing experience under his belt, Bill and his father felt it was time to make the move to a more competitive racing series - the NASCAR Busch North Series. One of eighteen rookies on the Busch North Series in 1995, Bill showcased hsi driving talent by racing with, learning from, and beating former champions of Busch North, IMSA road racing, and the American/Canadian Tour. Bill raced alongside current Busch Grand National and Winston Cup drivers as well as drivers who had begun racing before Bill was even born. He captured four Penrose "Rookie of the Race" awards, more than any other rookie. Bill has proven to be a tough competitor on the Busch North Series, never backing down from a battle and always trying for that one last position on the last lap. He has turned this talent into a career record full of top-five and top-ten finishes. His best finish came at Seekonk Speedway in 2002, where he fought eventual winner Matt Kobyluck tooth and nail for the lead, only to have to settle for second. He's really shined on the two road courses the series visits, with a fifth place finish at Watkins Glen his best of a number of top-ten finishes at that track and Lime Rock Park - despite his claiming he's not a road racer. Keeping his skills sharp by getting back into his Pro Stock occasionally, Bill has his eyes on his first Busch North win, which very well may be right around the corner. |
