Penfold Motorsports Update: February 2004

(Yarmouth, Maine - February 9, 2004) - Bill Penfold, Bob Harrison, and the rest of Penfold Motorsports have been busy this off-season gearing up for another busy year of racing in 2004. And while the first race of the new year isn't until April, the Penfolds have some public appearances on tap before then.

The first item on the team's schedule is to display Ray Penfold's restored 1938 Dodge coupe Modified at the Racin' Preview at the Portland, Maine Expo. The team is justifiably proud of its slice of history and is looking forward to displaying it at the show, which runs February 20th and 21st.

Continuing on the show circuit, Bill Penfold will be on hand to meet and greet fans in the first weekend of March at Racearama in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The Busch North autograph session will be held the afternoon of Saturday, March 6th.

In the race shop, the groundwork to run the full 2004 NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series schedule has been laid with cars for the first two cars already finished and ready to race. A new engine from Carl Wegner will power the cars.

"We're taking the car we crashed at Lee back to Lee," Penfold said. "We put a new snout on it and went through everything and it's ready to do. The car for Thompson is also done, and we're putting the finishing touches on the road course car for Lime Rock."

In addition to the Busch cars, Penfold has other cars ready to go in the shop, and they're not all for himself to drive.

"We've got our Pro Stock ready to race, and we're going to run that in the DNK Select 250 at Unity Raceway and the Oxford 250 in July," he said. "And we've got a new Limited that Mike [Bill's son] will be racing at Oxford this year.

"We also have a Busch North car that's available to buy or rent," Penfold continued. "It's the Pontiac we ran a few times last year. It's got a southern body on it, and it's a strut car. Make a deal, bring your seat and go racing."

With the Penfold Motorsports crew returning intact, Bill Penfold thinks his team is going to be in good shape for the coming season. The only item missing from the puzzle is sponsorship.

"It's an expensive tour to run," he said. "We're just looking for a little help to help reduce what we're spending out of our own pocket. If we could just get someone to help us with the tire bill, that would be a huge help. We're not asking for much.

"It wouldn't be so necessary if NASCAR could step in and do something to curb the costs of running in the series," Penfold continued. "There's a lot of ways we're spending money where we don't have to. The bodywork alone is expensive - there are guys going down south having bodies put on their cars for $10,000 each, and they've got three cars. We do everything in-house as best as we can, but we're already behind those guys who can afford to put that kind of money into their cars. Still, we can run with them, but it makes it just a little harder to beat them."
